Commonwealth + State + Territory agencies
Updated 2 Sept 2026
The National Framework is unique in spanning all three tiers of government. It is not directly binding: each jurisdiction adopts it through its own policy. For suppliers, that means broadly aligned expectations regardless of which jurisdiction is buying, with local variations in wording and timing.
Key obligations
- Each jurisdiction translates the Framework into its own policy instruments.
- Maintain AI registers, accountable officials, risk tiering and incident reporting.
- Check the specific jurisdiction's policy — there is no single national compliance date.
Key dates
- 21 Jun 2024Framework agreed by Data and Digital Ministers.
- VariesEach jurisdiction sets its own adoption timing; no common deadline has been published.
Who is affected
- Commonwealth, state and territory agencies and statutory bodies.
- Suppliers selling into multiple jurisdictions — expect aligned but not identical clauses.
